The Eurasian wigeon is a bird of open wetlands. These are wet grassland or marshes with some taller vegetation. They usually feed by dabbling for plant food or grazing, which it does very readily.

The Eurasian wigeon breeds in the northernmost areas of Europe and outside the breeding season it is highly gregarious and will form large flocks.
